Before starting, I would like to lay a brief idea about IMAP and POP.

Difference between IMAP and POP:

IMAP and POP are two different protocols. IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol and POP stands for Post Office Protocol.

IMAP always syncs with the mail server(gmail, yahoo and bsnl etc) so any changes in the mail client/devices (Outlook, Thunderbird etc) will instantly effect the mail server i.e will reflect in your mail inbox. if you read a mail using mail client, you will see it as "read" in your inbox. Likewise if you delete any mail from your mail client it will directly delete from mail server (inbox). Since mail client/devices are always sync with mail server, using IMAP you can access your mail from multiple mail clients/devices and each clients/devices detect any changes in real time. This is the biggest advantage of IMAP over POP.

On the other hand, POP doesn't sync with the mail server. In POP, your mails are just downloaded to your PC or Mobile device and remove from your mail inbox. And changes made in the mail client won't reflect your mail inbox. e.g. If you send a mail using your mail client, you won't find it in your  email "sent mail".  Since after downloading, the original mail is removed from the server, hence you can’t access it from another computer. This concludes that in POP, you can not access your email from multiple client/device. (Note: Now a day there is an option to keep the copy of mail in inbox. Outlook/Thunderbird also provides an option to leave messages on server until you delete them).

CONFIGURATION:

Depending on the mail client/device and version, Field or pages where the parameter is to be feed may differ. But if you know the required parameters, you can easily configure other mail clients/devices. The required parameter for configuring the mail client/device for BSNL email mail are as follows,

IMAP
Incoming mail server: imap.bsnl.co.in
Port no: 143
Outgoing mail server: smtp.bsnl.co.in
Port no: 25

POP3
Incoming mail server: pop.bsnl.co.in
Port no: 110
Outgoing mail server: smtp.bsnl.co.in
Port no: 25


1) 
Tools >> Account Setting.

Click on "New"

3) 
Tick >> Next


4)
Select "Internet E-Mail" and click "Next"

5) 
"User Information": "Name" and "E-mail Address"
"Logon Information": "User name", "Password" and tick "Remember password".
If "Remember Password" is left un-tick, you have to type the password every time you access the mail server.

"Server Information": In "Account type" you will find IMAP and POP option. 

If you select IMAP,
Incoming mail server: imap.bsnl.co.in
Outgoing mail server: smtp.bsnl.co.in

If you select POP,
Incoming mail server: pop.bsnl.co.in
Outgoing mail server: smtp.bsnl.co.in


Then, Click "More Setting"

Outgoing server >> tick "My outgoing server requires authentication" and "use same setting as my incoming mail server".

For IMAP:
Incoming server: 143
and Outgoing server: 25
If you select POP in step number 5.
Incoming server: 110
Outgoing server: 25
and Tick "Leave a copy of message on the server". If you left un-tick, all the mails downloaded by mail client will be automatically deleted from mail server i.e from your mail inbox.
